Adobe Photoshop CS3: Top 5 Standout Latest features

When digging in Adobe Photoshop CS3 first, some features have really popped out me as incredibly useful. I wish to offer a brief summary of some of these new ways to attack your creative challenges using the latest version the killer application from Adobe. PsCS3 will run you about $ 649 to buy it if it does not outright own any previous versions. If you own Photoshop 7 CS, CS2 or, you are eligible for upgrade pricing – looks like $ 199 for the upgrade. Check Adobe's store on its website for more information. For more information about what comes in different versions of CS3, and what your suite configuration options are, see my previous post.

My current PsCS3 five favorite new features in order are:

1. Nondestructive Smart Filters
2. Quick Selection tool and Refine Edge
3. Photomerge with advanced alignment and blending
4. Automatically aligning and blending layers
5. Vanishing Point with adjustable angle

Reportage Panorama:

* Nondestructive Smart Filters

Adobe has finally given nonlinear nondestructive filters. "I can say" Hurrah! " In the past, applied filters and effects in a linear order: a filter to alter his image, and the second filter would change its image now changed, and a third filter alter altered altered image. The problem with that workflow is that if you decide you want to modify slightly the second filter, you'd have to undo it back to that point (losing further editing), or use the history palette directly over "in time" to the point before adding the second filter, add their "new" second filter, then add your third hand. All too often, can not remember what exact parameters had been established at the third – or worse, project included the real-world application 20 filters instead of 3 in my example and change the filter of a second would mean redoing the 18 that follow. What a nuisance. Because of this problem, people developed many work arounds (often saving many "partially completed" versions of files around hard disk with filenames interactive, with the hope that if I had to go back to a certain point you would be able to figure out where you had to be) and while these solutions were clever and well designed, in many cases was not a perfect solution, actually, to happen.

The real solution to all this is what has given us in CS3: Nondestructive Smart Filters. In this new version, each filter effect applied to a layer, is kept alive and continually re-editable in real time, and the parameters that fit all cascading down through any subsequent filters or effects that could have added to their coat. These are salvageable, Furniture, copy and pastable, and most importantly scalable.

* Quick Selection tool and Refine Edge

A mentor of mine design I once said "Photoshop is all about selection. You select something and then do something with the selection. Nothing more, nothing less. Remember that, and you'll never go wrong using this application. "Almost 10 years later I have to say that she was right. Use Photoshop is a matter of" selection. "More Photoshop tools for selecting that for any simple task.

As in almost all versions of Photoshop that has been released, has gone further CS3 more in the area of "making the selection" that comes to mind in recent years. The new Quick Selection tool is used in combination with Refine Edge Palette is the most useful way of selecting and clean the edges of an object in the picture I've ever seen. This new quick selection tool revised is so soft. You basically set the parameters of Quick Selection tool – like a brush – and paint the general area of the edges of your image (Like trying to select just a boy and his football photo of the big game) and Photoshop are watching what you do, and interpretation of what you think general the edges of what you are wanting to select and realize what is small and the ball and what is the grass and the goal posts and the sky and the crowd and select what you want. It's very fast and clean. You can then invoke the Refine Edge Palette, and you have seemingly infinite control over exactly how the edges of the selection of behavior. On the right palette to get an idea of what you could do to "refine" that advantage. With radio, timing, smoothing, and display settings, I think this new cut on my tape combo and select the time is quantifiable.

* Photomerge with alignment and advanced blend

Have you ever tried to put together a series of images he took, which aims to "arm" in a picture? Even with some of the only tools that have been available for years, even those to make quicktime VR's, are awkward and difficult to use – sometimes with mixed results. Always I wanted something built in Photoshop that let me do these photos "melts" – I never imagined that Photoshop would actually be able to do it automatically me. This feature me down. The technologies involved in my choice number four, "automatically aligning and blending layers" is at work here in this role as well, and the new car has the alignment layer in CS3 are far reaching and cut again and again in different areas of the application. It's really one of the revolutionary things about this new version.

All of the things that have to do panoramas a difficult task in the past are all done automatically. The main of which is 1. those times when you have to distort reality, rotate, skew or transform one of its elements because the prospect is Nutty 2. those times when the sun or lighting or window made the white balance, color space or washing all the brightness and contrast different from one image to the next (Especially when it is 360) and of course 3. actually find and align the overlapping areas of consecutive elements. Photoshop CS3 is everything to you and these results amazingly amazing. Not only is the typical "big picture" either … I saw a demonstration of someone who was "too close" a building and shooting extended to all Way Out, the main door, windows and window boxes, front walk way brick, tilt up and take a picture of the balcony and roof line of the second floor – in other words, many elements that were very out of tune in terms of perspective, lighting and color space, and these 4 or 5 images were distorted, set, rotate, matched, mixed, lighting and color density matched … and I was surprised as in 5 seconds, there was this point of view "W" almost "fish eye" Photomerge the front of the building, from the brick hallway to the roof-line, and it seemed incredible.

* Automatically align and blend layers

Another powerful application of this new alignment and technology is the mixture with a series or stack of images of the same subject. Let's say you wanted to take a picture of a statue in a park somewhere, or a huge fountain, or the front of a monument or building. There are always people walking through the frame – if you can not close the area and still get an idea of the statue in the park, it's beautiful scenery, but no people or birds or random elements – what you do? In the past, was a laborious process of shooting a lot of images, select the closest " of a view of a nice, clean frame, fewer tourists, and begin the long hours of painting, cloning, healing, brushing, etc. to remove all the "hazards." There are artists who are very good at this process, but I'm pretty sure you would agree that if there was a way of not having to spend all that time, they had to take it. Well, it's here. Photoshop CS3 can take the block of images and analysis of them all, find out what things are permanent (things that appear in all images as that building in the distance, the big tree, sidewalk, and which parts of the image is dark in one of the frames, but not all, automatically cured by borrowing pixels of the images in other cell and the creation of an advanced composite of all the images and do 90% or most of the work for you. There's even a set of "confusion" sliders that allows him to say "things that are eleminate in X% of the images in the stack or less. "This is so impressive to see in action. You have to try some of their own images. It's really hard to believe it's that easy to do this type of process now. This is one of those new areas which I am sure we will see the artists find incredibly creative ways to use this feature. Again, he was floored when I first saw it.

* Vanishing Point with adjustable angle

One of the most powerful new features Adobe CS2 was characteristic Vanishing Point. One of the limitations I had was that there was only one set of angles to work at the interface of vanishing point. Adobe took a step further exponential adding multiple, adjustable angle perspective planes on this flight point feature. What this allows you to do is copy, paste and clone in image planes much more complex than only the parties' clone of a building in perspective "work that the first iteration of this feature provides (and very impressive scope, but not very flexible). One of the great examples of Adobe is pushing this function is to simulate 3D packaging and work in multiple planes at different angles in the same image. As an open box of a new product, or even to experiment with your final package art to see in real-world context. Again I think that this feature has far-reaching implications for so many inventors, prototypers, 3D modelers, visual effects artists … and can give artists the ability to render Photoshop full blown art models of packaging product for customers in a whole new way – get us to sign-off, green light and the next project that concerns us much more quickly. I like a lot.

There are numerous developments in the implementation, especially when you dig deep into the Photoshop Extended Editions (sounds like a Peter Jackson DVD …) And as the week progresses here, I would like to study something that PsCS3 Extended has to offer. PsCS3 versions that are available are those of Film & Video, Medical & Science, AEC (Architecture, Engineering & Construction), and manufacturing issues.
