Martial Arts are about survival

Here's a surprise for you … Martial arts are about survival. Yes, indeed. The purpose martial arts is the ability and knowledge to be able to do in the bad and still get home in time to walk the dog. The martial arts are not a certain type Fashion training designed to
impress the ladies as they are told about tournaments or trophies you've won. While it is certainly an impressive exercise all body and a great way to get fit many students actually give little importance to its ultimate goal, survival.

Let's talk about self-defense. I was one of the cofounders of the Institute of Karate Self-Defense of Colombia, Inc., in Alexandria, Virginia. Three other instructors, my wife (also a black belt) and I we decided that we encountered too many highly qualified black belts who had won numerous
trophies in the sport of karate competition. They were champions and winners and knew all the tricks in the ring to score points and go home with high-gloss plastic and marble trophies. Sounds good does not it well. Except for one small problem, almost every one of these black belt champions have not even the most basic skills or knowledge how to defend against an attacker, even one, let alone multiple attackers. What about that?

They are black belts. They must be able to leap over tall buildings, run faster than bullets to stop a high speed train running between the raindrops! , Right? No, but it certainly seems that the average person than a black belt has to be almost indestructible and has probably some as
mystical power and knowledge. Wrong again. If they are not trained correctly with a real emphasis on self-defense and street application of martial arts techniques, then there are only imitating the movements of their instructor.

If you are a black belt and can not even defend their way out of a wet paper bag then what happened all those years doing? Let me say it again, martial arts are about survival. It is not false point sparring competition where the only technique that can be used in the ring are things that never occur in the street use and more effective techniques of the street are not allowed in the ring.

When studying the martial arts everything is just punches and kicks, you must learn about the many qualities of humanity, both positive and negative, because your brain is the ultimate survival tool. In Ultimately, in its essence, is the need to survive, whether in the streets of New York,
the jungles of Asia, the deserts of the Middle East or even a business climate hostile. To survive and combat hostile environments, the martial artist must have many skills and have developed many physical and character attributes. To survive, should improve
yourself beyond your current abilities. However, remember the best warrior is not warlike, but is able to invoke the warrior spirit inside when so require.

Preparing to Survive: adaptability and versatility

Survival requires adaptability, which is the ability to respond quickly, efficiently and without confusion to changing stimuli. These stimuli may be different training conditions. May be new techniques and styles of martial arts, weapons, or changes in light, temperature, speed,
distance, area, or any other attribute of their environment.

To survive, positive change by varying their training. The more you do, the better prepared you are to adapt effectively, because you're always doing. Many martial arts systems have training sessions in which students practice their martial arts in the rain, snow, mud, swamps and other rough terrain and difficult. In this way students learn to be aware of environmental factors, but also filter out distractions and focus on defeating his opponent.

Do not get frustrated if circumstances change or vary. Welcome it. Anything else would be boring. Variety improvement and maintains its ability to survive. You can not adapt you are not aware of the former is around to which you can learn to adapt. If you can adapt, you may just survive.

Adaptability also may refer to the use of their environment. For example, you can use your environment, take a handful of sand to throw in the eyes of your opponent. You can grab a branch lying on the ground to strike your opponent or push them headlong into a vertical pole
support within an underground train or bus. These are examples of using the features the terrain and surrounding environment to your advantage to increase their martial skills. Typically, these are weapons of opportunity.

The versatility is to have a wide range of skills, you can kick or punch, well, move well, think versatility is the quality etc and have many skills, adaptability is the ability to acquire new knowledge with ease. As versatile gradually become more adaptable. Do not confuse these two and relevant training.

Realism and Diversity Training

The most realistic training experience. . . shocking to say the least resemble reality. Part of its formation is variable practice for realism. Take your training seriously. If a joke or becomes too much of a social gathering, you will easily be surprised or overwhelmed in a real
situation. As I described above, some schools of martial arts practice in the swamps, rain and all types of terrain and environments. Martial arts are a war fighting skill where realism is a key ingredient.

Part of the reason for the diversity and variation in training realistic is to introduce different elements. A curious thing happens when you make a very realistic training drill, you do not feel. Reality is not always pleasant, but the reality is what you are training for. Be
comfortable, it's a good thing. Get used to it in training would not be surprised to see happen for real.

In a real fight, do not let it be your opponent see you hurt. Play off of your injury if possible. Even if your injury is not visible or sensitive, let your opponent think it is not affected. This will stop and think that perhaps his techniques are ineffective. In
other situations, depending on the opponent and the circumstances you may want pretend you are hurt worse than they are. Posing a more serious injury can give your opponent a false sense of security thinking that is near you counterproductive. Then you want it. This is deception at its best. It does not help to focus on himself. Keep your eyes and your mind on your opponent in a real fight. The lesions may be discussed later, a real opponent should be treated immediately.

Survey: Preparing to Attack

If your opponent is an army of one hundred thousand men or a man, must find the weak points of the probe and collect data on the strength of his opponent, position, mobility, reactions and skill.

Attack your enemy when they are weak, but first know this test. Test for defects. Look closely and see potential weakness, signs inexperience and disorganization. If feint and attack your enemy does not respond in a way that is appropriate for their own
defense, then you have discovered a weakness potential or the area where you may be able to make an opening.

When you test your opponent in a particular way, not only take note of what his response was, but how fast, precise and strong was her reply. These factors will be important in determining how to attack and how to build and time of attack.

Deception: the key to victory

Sun Tzu said that deception is the key to victory in all wars, but what is a hoax? If I apply, I have to say what is and how to apply. What constitutes cheating? Creativity is the key to the deception. Think about how draw your opponent off guard. When
waiting for something, give them something else. Draw your attention away from his true intentions so that when their true intentions come true, your opponent will be caught unaware and surprised. Do not be predictable.

The components of deception are:

  • Creativity
  • Dodge or pretending
  • Distraction
  • Opposites

These components combined to give wisely based on a strategy. You should practice your creativity. Creativity requires the development of new and different ways of feints and diversionary methods or use of opposites.

Always create or change to new means of deception because once your opponent recognizes a deceptive tactic, no matter how difficult or cunning, will be better prepared to counter it. Always give something new to try. This gives you the advantage.

Distraction is not the same as faking. When you fake, you make your opponent think one thing is happening when it is not. The distraction gives your opponent for something or focus on addressing long as its true intentions. The idea is that at the time to continue with their true intentions, your opponent is still too busy dealing with what preceded them.

The difference between a distraction and a false distraction is that they are actually doing something, with a fake, only making your opponent think you're doing something. This applies to combat, defense and many things.

Distractions are not necessarily always physical movements. They can also be psychological. You can distract an attacker who is bent on doing harm to talk to him. You can use psychology to distract him and engage him in conversation, which is actually buying time to control the situation better or to maneuver into a better position.

If you are able to make their mind opponent and thereby distract him, then you do not have to rely on physical ability and posture. Consider the possibilities. This is how to prevent hostage negotiators unwanted physical damage occurs.

Fakes must seem real or not work. A fake bad is worse than no false because they leave you vulnerable. The advantage of a false credible is that if the opponent does not react in time may only use the false truth. To make a real look fake, you must believe
is actually going to do what whatever. Then at the last moment, do not pull the cutting technique and immediately proceed with the technique that is really intended.

The purpose of a counterfeiting is to make your opponent react to it, usually to create an opening which can be used with a different technique. For example, a kick to the head false can make your opponent raise both arms to shield his face and head. This exposes
his torso where it really may be planning a coup to land.

Whatever technique you choose to falsify, the two key elements of an effective false false art should look completely real – especially against a martial artist experienced – and follow-up after the false must be quickly and decisively to take advantage of
opening or opportunity that you have created.

Attack

As I said, attacking the weaknesses of your opponent. Of course, you must discover its weaknesses to the survey. Once you've found, the attack without piety. Not any attack when he is strong and ready, stay away from this or that will be wasting efforts.

The attacks may have a variety of forms. They can be like picking from time to time to annoy your opponent and he gradually wear out. Could it be that his greatest weakness is simply resistance or resistance. You can just floating in it occasionally picks up you can not
continue. Then, either kill it or leave.

An attack can be a concentrated burst short and then it was over. You can use a short burst to distract and confuse his opponent, which puts them at a disadvantage, then follow with the body Main attack and kill the final to secure victory.

Another critical concept for you to understand is that in a situation of legitimate defense their survival may depend on striking first. In the body of this concept is a philosophy expounded by Bruce Lee. If you feel that an assault or an attack is imminent when you're in a dangerous situation and is convinced that his safety or life is in grave danger – first strike. The pre-emptive strike can give advantage they need to survive. On the street and in combat, no additional comp points to allow your attacker to throw the first blow.

Decisiveness

Do not hesitate. Wait, be prepared, the time of his technique and the strike, but do not hesitate. Take advantage before your opponent seizes it. The decisiveness is essential for survival in situations that may be ahead of your opponent. The anticipation is necessary when the meaning or reading
your opponent and determine they are about to strike or take positions in a way that increases the threat they pose to you. Be decisive in a course of action to prevent your opponent from the realization their plans.

Recycle Your Arms

Do not allow an opponent to use a weapon (gun / knife / arm / leg) again after they are disarmed. Stepping on the weapon, throw or kick it away prevents recycling. However, I want to recycle and reuse your own weapons many times as appropriate – Circuits
Strikes can be easily repeated, modified and used repeatedly and combined with the rotation of the hips for more power. If you grab an arm or wrist or foot – do not let go. These are the weapons. If you have one, or damage control so that your opponent can not use against you again.

Harmful Their weapons

Punch your arm or lock the arm that is punching to hurt your arm or wrist. The damage of the knee, foot or leg that can not be used to relaunch. If the situation is grave, broken wrist, shoulder, elbow, or fingers that can not be used again to hurt you! You must decide
what is appropriate depending on the level of threat.

Environment and land as a strategy

Things around us are your environment. This includes the field, covering the ground surfaces, objects, artefacts, obstructions, structures and people around you.

Your environment can be used to your advantage. Can also be used for the benefit of his opponent. Watch this. The ways in which the environment can be used are many. You may be able to hide or escape from an opponent in the dark or fog. You may be able to use
everyday objects around you as weapons to add to his defense with empty hands.

You can use a wall or a railing to put the foot or as a support to launch a kick to make it more stable and less vulnerable. You can throw objects in the path or the face of your attacker to distract him and buy time to maneuver or escape.

You can use almost any object around to shoot, swing, tip, spray or move quickly and easily to put time or distance between you and your opponent. Consider the possibilities and you are often surprised at what you realize you never noticed. However, not too
trapped in a desperate defender trying to find too many objects or obstacles that may in fact delay more than what your opponent.

Each time you use weapons of opportunity or aspects of their environment should be easily accessible and usable, requiring only a fraction second to grasp or put to use to help their defense or to provide a momentary advantage. Anything else really puts you at a disadvantage.

You can train, study and prepare, but when you're in a situation of self defense or any other form of combat, has no knowledge of the terrain and its surface then you may be surprised and defeated.

It is essential to vary your workout. This includes the change in the type of terrain or area in which you train. Its formation should give you the opportunity to train on grass, dirt, gravel, water or mud and on smooth surfaces like ice or tiles. All these areas require
to adapt and select different techniques and strategies of the library.

Land is not only the surface of the land on which you stand, but the contours of the ground beneath these surfaces. As Sun Tzu said, the land can have many features, which may give the advantage or to take advantage.

The land can provide an escape route as in wide open areas. Another way out may be a wooded area or a maze of narrow streets where you can give your opponent the slip. Use the ground as a point of view, as in higher elevations. You can use it to round or
otherwise trap an opponent. You can use the terrain to hide and protect. This may be good for you or bad for you depending on whether you are hiding yourself, or if your enemy is himself hidden.

Any surface or area in which the equilibrium or balance is compromised or disadvantaged will need to be a pretext to grab headlines or fence to stand upright or you will have to lower its center of gravity and posture to avoid falling.

Use the terrain or objects around to your advantage. The rocks and boulders provide a shield, concealment or protection. Can kick loose dirt or throw into the face of his opponent. You can also do this with water or other liquids.

If another surface is so unpredictable or disadvantages that can not maintain balance and control, you can even consider developing your opponent to the ground and taking the lowest conflict, provided that have trained and studied ground fighting. Then you will have an advantage even in adverse terrain.

You can use ice, snow, land surfaces for fight, and then not be as concerned with maintaining balance or walking because they're down. If you stay upright, should expand its position to be more unprepared to maintain traction. Kicks and sweeps are riskier because they reduce its footing. In these cases, the techniques of hand may be more appropriate. Techniques and the strategy will vary with the terrain and surfaces. Find benefits when there seems to be none. This is the essence of victory!

In addition, consider the same advantages that you can find, your enemy can use. Do not assume that your opponent will not use the land or the surfaces to the same advantage he would. You should train on different terrain, flat, irregular and uneven, rocks, disorderly wooded with waste
or debris in the narrow limits such as alleys or elevators, outdoor and in streams or cars or trains on the inside.

Land is a major component of the environment, as I have discussed. The more often to train in different terrains and environments, the most versatile and adaptable it can be.

It's About Survival

I started by saying that martial arts are about survival. The themes I have addressed in this article provide only a brief look at a few key few concepts that most commercially trained martial artists are completely unrelated. I encourage you to study the fighting techniques and tactics of urban combat and robberies Street and incorporate what they learned in their training. As for books and videos for a better understanding of these tactics and the techniques to study how have learned in his martial arts training can be incorporated or adapted for practical use in a real situation and not just as a way to test demonstration next belt.

We had a saying in the United Karate … If you can not defend … nothing else matters.
