building muscle / strength training?

Ok so I just posted a question about taking a martial art. Although I do not know which, however, I want to start exercising before hand. I have been out of the exercise for a while now, so I prefer to start getting in shape first. My weight is not a problem, and I will start jogging more often, so once the exams are over. I have some months in the summer of basically nothing, so I try to use that time to train harder. Thus, cardiovascular exercise aside, can anyone give clues to muscle / strength building? I'm a little short of money right now so the choice isn't regular gym, all I have access is 4x 2 4x kg and 1.25 kg weights for a set of weights. Can anyone tell me what key areas that should work, how I can go about it, how many repetitions of each exercise, etc and the time of day? Salud!
