What is a wireless external flash for Digital Slr?

I thinking of buying an external flash for my Sony Dslr-A300. "I was watching the Sony HVL-F42AM external flash. What does it mean when they say "wireless connectivity at a distance" What else do I have to do that aside from my camera and flash? I guess I do not understand what they mean when they say descpritions wireless? Thanks!

If you set your camera to Wireless flash and open pop-up flash, then the F42AM to wireless operation, receives a coded message from the pop-up flash to fire when you press the shutter. Voila! Wireless flash. It is designed for more "creative" lighting and eliminating red-eye, that sort of thing. I have 3 flashes all fires and display perfectly in the Sony wireless mode. You do not need anything else. But reading the instructions – can you say to set the wireless mode, , while the flash is connected to the camera. I can not remember anything else if you're supposed to do it that way.
